You know what buttercream is? This is of fundamental importance if you are to understand properly how to make buttercream frosting. Buttercream is essentially a form of icing used to coat cakes, and while it is palatable, sometimes it is considered mere decoration. Often you may hear buttercream referred to as butter icing.

Anyone Can Make Buttercream

Buttercream can be made using ordinary margarine or even lard, but if you want to keep it really simple, just go for butter and powdered sugar – light, delicious, but simple. And, of course, you can add some color and flavorings to it; things like chocolate or fruit purees. The best way to learn how to make buttercream frosting well is to imagine the kind of outcome you want. For this you can visualize the topping you normally see on cupcakes, butter cakes, and a variety of other desserts.

What Frosting Is

Frosting is mostly used in the US to mean icing in reference to cakes and other desserts. So when you speak of learning how to make buttercream frosting, you are simply referring to learning how to do icing using buttercream. Whatever form of frosting you want to prepare, people expect it to be sweet. And mostly it looks like some creamy glaze. However, you can also make it a rich part of your dessert by including egg whites and cheese as ingredients.

How to make Buttercream Frosting

  • Take a bowl of medium size and put in your powdered sugar and butter
  • Mix them thoroughly using a spoon. If you use an electric mixer, keep the speed low
  • Add in vanilla and a spoonful of milk and stir the mixture
  • If need be, add in the remaining milk, little by little, just to ensure your frosting is smooth and easy to spread.

What happens if the frosting becomes too thin to spread? Easy – Simply add some more powdered sugar, mix thoroughly, and you are done. The buttercream frosting you have just made is enough to cover a 30cm by 20cm cake.

Now that you know how to make buttercream frosting, you probably need to learn how to bake a cake. That is the only way you are going to put your skills effectively to work. In the meantime, enjoy whatever hot meal is in your insulated lunchbox – every home is presumed to have a set of modern lunch boxes these days – then you can have a look at a cake recipe.
