Ingredients

(1 cup = 240 ml)
4 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup rice flour
2 tbsp sesame seeds
4 tsp red chili powder
2 tsp ground coriander
1/2 tsp carom seeds
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
salt to taste
3 tbsp vegetable oil plus additional for frying
1 cup plain yogurt or curd
6 tbsp plain yogurt

How to Make Chakli

  1. Mix wheat flour and rice flour in a bowl.
  2. In a steam cooker, steam the flour mix for about 15 minutes
  3. Allow it to cool a bit and use a fork to separate the stiff flour.
  4. Sieve the flour into a bowl.
  5. Add sesame seeds, red chili powder, ground coriander, carom seeds, ground turmeric, salt to taste, 3 spoons of oil, and the yogurt to the sifted flour.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Add water as needed and knead the flour.
    • Tip: The flour has to be stiff.
  1. Prepare the chakli mould – Fix the star attachment into the mold.
  2. Take a small portion of the dough and fill the chakli mould.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan.
  4. Press the mould, gently dispersing the dough in oil.
  5. Deep fry until the chakli turns golden on both the sides.
  6. Serve and enjoy.

Trivia

Chaklis are known by different names in different parts of India. In Kannada it is chakkuli, in Gujarati it is known as chakri, in Telugu it is called chakralu or jantikalu, and in Konkani it is chakri or chakkuli.
