We all know that it is impossible to satisfy a kid’s hunger with just main meals. They love to have snacks. Hence, most parents end up taking them for fast food or street food. Unfortunately, these foods can be unhealthy for kids. So, we bring you a simple recipe of chakli, a crisp spiral shaped snack. This is different from the typical one, as it uses whole wheat flour. It is a perfectly wholesome snack. You just need an hour for the preparation and cooking. You can prepare chakli for school snacks too. You can store it in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Whole wheat grains reduces the risk of some chronic diseases. Grains are important sources of many nutrients including fiber, B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folate) and minerals (iron, magnesium, and selenium).

How to Make It

  1. Mix wheat flour and rice flour in a bowl.
  2. Place some water into idly/steam cooker. Place bowl of flour mixture into the steam cooker.
  3. Cover the flour with a clean cloth. Let it steam for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove the flour from the cooker. Use a fork to separate the stiff flour.
  5. Sieve it into a bowl. Add sesame seeds, red chili powder, ground coriander, carom seeds, ground turmeric, salt to taste, 3 tbsp. oil, and the yogurt to the sifted flour. Mix well.
  6. Add water as needed and knead the flour. It must be stiff. Cover and set aside.
  7. Prepare the chakli mold by putting a star attachment into the mold.
  8. Take a small portion of the dough and put it into the chakli mold.
  9. Turn the handle while swirling the mold to get spiral dough shapes.
  10. Heat oil in a pot for deep frying. Deep fry the dough until chakli are golden in color and crisp.
  11. Drain on paper towels. Store the chaklis in an airtight container.
