Coconut flour is produced as a by-product of coconut milk. Coconut meat residue is dehydrated to produce coconut flour. It is very rich in fiber and proteins. It is also very low in cholesterol. All parts of the coconut tree are considered useful for mankind. We get coconut milk, coconut oil, coconut flour, and coir from coconut trees. The people who are on ketogenic diets make use of coconut flour instead of whole wheat flour or refined flour. The use of coconut flour eliminates the carbohydrates found in grains and adds the fiber and protein from the coconut plant.

How is coconut flour made?

Coconut flour is not readily available in supermarkets but can be easily made at home. Coconut flour is a soft flour that is free from grains. It is made from dried coconut meat. When we make coconut milk at home, coconut flour can also be easily made.

Coconut meat is pressed to express coconut milk and the residue that is left can be made into coconut flour. It is dried so that any water left in it is removed. It can also be dried in a microwave at low heat. The coarse sand-like substance obtained can be ground to make coconut flour. Coconut flour is low in saturated fats and it is also known to be healthy for the skin.

How to make coconut flour at home

  • You need one ripe coconut and one-liter water. Drain all coconut water from the ripe coconut and open it.
  • Cut the tender coconut meat and peel the skin of the coconut with a peeler. Chop the coconut meat into small pieces and blend in a processor with one liter of water. A thick, smooth paste will be formed. Make sure the coconut milk and water are evenly blended.
  • Sieve the coconut milk with a cheesecloth. Transfer the residue left to a baking tray and spread it evenly. Bake in the microwave for approximately 45 minutes so that all water dries.
  • The dried pulp is blended in a food processor. What you obtain is coconut flour!
