Common Cold

Many sicknesses are referred to as the “common cold”. But what makes a sickness a common cold in the first place? The common cold is a viral infection of the nose or throat. It is basically an inconvenience and is relatively harmless. It can be caused by a wide variety of viruses and is more defined by its symptoms than the actual viruses themselves. Some common symptoms include, sore throat, cough, congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and low grade fever. You can’t cure a common cold, you have to simply wait for your immune system to get rid of it. But you can treat its symptoms and boost your immune system using some home remedies below.

Chicken soup

Chicken soup is one of the best things you can do to treat a cold. It has everything you need in one simple dish. The broth is infused with vital vitamins and minerals that are easy to absorb thanks to their liquid nature, and have the ability to boost your immune system. The heat from the soup also helps to break up mucus and reduce inflammation in your chest and nose. Chicken soup is also extremely easy to prepare with just a few simple ingredients.

Ginger

Ginger is a legendary cure for many ailments. It has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. It cannot cure your cold, but it can definitely treat the symptoms of your cold, including coughing, sore throat, and nausea.

Honey

Honey is a common food item used to treat sickness. Most people probably think it’s just there to make bitter teas and medicines taste sweeter. But honey has so much more to offer. It has both, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. This means honey can actually attack and clean up the bacteria that are causing the cold. Honey also has the ability to alleviate some of the symptoms caused by the cold. It can soothe the throat and is a pretty powerful cough suppressant, and it can help you get a good night’s sleep (sleeping is vital for keeping your immune system strong).

Garlic

Garlic is one of the best things you can eat when you’re sick. It contains allicin, a compound that has antimicrobial properties. If you’re prone to sickness, you may just want to include garlic in your diet on a regular basis, as the antimicrobial properties can help stop you from becoming sick in the first place.
