How is iodine important in your pregnancy diet?

There are certain necessary elements required for the overall development of baby during pregnancy. This includes Omega-3s, vitamins, and minerals. One of the important elements is iodine which is vital and plays an important role in the development of baby during pregnancy. Iodine is important to ensure the proper functioning of thyroid gland. Thyroid gland is the one which controls the functioning of the various body organs.

The improper development of thyroid gland can be fatal and could also cause developmental delays in babies. Iodine is consumed by the baby later from the mother’s breast milk and is essential for the development of the body and the brain. The easiest way to consume iodine is the use of iodized salt. Iodine deficiency can lead to poor mental development so it is important to consult with your doctor who will be the best judge in recommending the best possible diet for you with the daily requirement of iodine met.

Iodine-rich foods

These include baked potatoes, milk, tuna fish, iodized salt, hard-boiled eggs, fish sticks, and codfish. Ensure that you do not consume fish with a high mercury content, though. Vegetables and milk products also provide iodine but the consumption of seafood should be limited as it might contain a higher quantity of iodine than required which can be harmful.

It is best to consult with your doctor to know if you need any iodine supplements. We highly recommend taking the requisite amount of iodine from natural sources rather than opting for iodine supplements.

Most commercial salt brands have the right amount of iodine so it is best to use iodized salt to get iodine. However, if your consumption of salt has been restricted due to health problems, you need to consult your doctor who will guide you in this regard.
