Here are Foods to Reduce Estrogen Levels in Men

As men age, lower levels of testosterone become a common problem. Men who suffer from low levels of testosterone have an increased level of the hormone estrogen. To keep a check on the increasing level of estrogen, it is advised to take a diet that blocks estrogen. The increased levels of estrogen raise the risk of heart disease in both men and women. It also causes certain types of cancers.

The foods that block estrogen contain phytochemicals which are helpful in reducing the level of estrogen in the blood. These phytochemicals are called so because they are derived from plants.

Diets that block estrogen levels

  • The consumption of cruciferous vegetables is considered the best remedy to block estrogen levels. These vegetables contain a lot of phytochemicals and these vegetables can be cooked in a variety of ways. Cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, turnips, brussels sprouts, bok choy.
  • Mushrooms are also known to block estrogen level. Certain varieties such as crimini, baby button, and portobello are known to reduce the levels of estrogen as they prevent the production of aromatase.
  • The enzyme aromatase converts the androgen hormone into estrogen. Raw mushrooms can be added to salads or combined with onions and other foods to be used as flavoring agents. Never wildly pick mushrooms as they could be poisonous.
  • Red grapes are also considered great sources of estrogen-blocking foods. Red grapes can be consumed at room temperature or after refrigeration.
  • Some types of seeds such as sesame and flax are also known to reduce the level of estrogen. These seeds contain polyphenols which are micronutrients and are derived from plants.
  • Flax and sesame seeds can be added to your recipes that need to be cooked or baked or they can be added to smoothies.
  • Whole grains such as wheat, rice, barley, oats, and corn are also known to reduce the level of estrogen.
  • Remember to always consult your doctor before you make any changes to your diet.
