Why plant-based diets are heart healthy?

Several experts have suggested that the consumption of a plant-based diet helps reduce the risk of heart disease. There are certain types of plant-based foods that are known to have great benefits for the heart.

Plant-based diets and heart health

  • Foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and oils including olive oil are great for heart health.
  • Diets which are rich in vitamins, fiber, and minerals will reduce LDL cholesterol and help reduce blood pressure as well. Such diets are also ideal for weight watchers as they will help them stay fit and in shape.
  • It is also important to observe the type of plant foods you consume and the sources from which they are being obtained. For instance, white bread and white rice, even though they are plant-based, they are highly processed and thus lack a number of nutrients that are beneficial for heart health. Such foods also have a high glycemic index implying they can cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. They can result in hunger pangs and will ultimately contribute to overeating.
  • It is also a great idea to eat the whole fruit rather than drinking 100% fruit juice as the latter has high sugar content and loses the fiber as well as vitamins. Canned plant foods will also contain sugar, sodium, and additives which are not all good for your health.
  • It is recommended to consume whole grains and fresh fruits and veggies while cutting down on the consumption of animal foods and those plant foods that aren’t as healthy. People who consume plant-based diets have been found to have the lowest heart disease risk. They are also usually leaner and more active.
  • Those who consume unhealthy and processed plant-based foods could be at a higher risk of heart disease.
