Why Eating Junk Food is Equivalent to Smoking

Smoking is considered to be one of the biggest risks to health. It raises the risk of cancer, lung diseases, and cardiac diseases. A new study has shown that the consumption of unhealthy food increases the mortality rate at a much greater rate than smoking. It is the addiction to junk food which is to blame. Junk food actually decreases the lifespan and has ill-effects on lifestyle and health. Mindless snacking, consumption of donuts, chocolates, colas, and binge-eating on a regular basis is the biggest threat that mankind is facing today. It is considered to be one of the major causes of lifestyle diseases. The consumption of bad and unhealthy food that does not contain any nutrition causes deaths that could be prevented.

How Junk Food is the New Smoking

There’s no denying that junk food is the new smoking. Here’s why.

  • The number of such deaths is even more than the number of deaths caused by tobacco. Also, research shows that the consumption of junk food is more in people who are below the age of 70 years.
  • Leaving vegetables and opting for processed foods is the real culprit. People who live in more developed countries consume more unhealthy and processed food in comparison to the people who live in the developing parts of the world.
  • In developing countries, the consumption of grains and vegetables is much more. All around the world, there was an increase in the consumption of aerated and sugary drinks which raised the risk of diabetes.
  • Thus, poor dietary habits are more threatening to our overall health in comparison to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.
  • Scientists say that poor diet is also a silent killer. Unhealthy diets consist of low intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and a high intake of aerated and sweetened drinks, processed foods, sodium, and red meat.
