Spices, Sweeteners, and Herbs to Activate the Immune System

To boost the functioning of your immune system, you are advised to consume bitters. It is a healthy tonic and is made from ginger, honey, angelica root, and astragalus root. All these provide support to the immune system. Bitters has a bitter-sweet or bitter-sour flavor.

Astragalus

This is a herb that is prominently used in Chinese medicine and has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Astragalus root is known to regulate the immune system and increases the resistance of the body to diseases.

Angelica root 

Angelica root is known to provide relief from the symptoms of colds and other respiratory diseases. It can modulate immune system function. 

Honey and Ginger 

These are known to contain powerful antioxidants and have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey increases the response of the body to fight any infections. Ginger provides relief from muscle pains. 

Recipe to prepare bitters 

Here’s how you can make bitters at home and use it. 

  • Dissolve honey in boiling water and allow it to cool. Add dried astragalus and dried angelica roots along with a dried orange peel, dried ginger, cinnamon stick, cardamom seeds, and dried chamomile. 
  • Add alcohol to the blend. Close the lid tightly and store in a place that is dry and cool. Leave it for about 14-28 days. Remember to shake the jar well once a day. 
  • Strain the blend. We recommend that you use a muslin cheesecloth and keep the strained blend in a container that is airtight. Store bitters at room temperature. 
  • To use, it can be mixed with hot tea or some drops can be consumed directly. It provides relief from cold and flu. Women who are breastfeeding or are pregnant should avoid use of bitters.
