Life can be truly strange and bizarre. All it takes is one decision to change everything for better or worst. One good decision can bring mountains of bliss and one bad decision can bring never ending headaches. This is especially the case when it comes to binge eating – something that we all do at one time or another.
For the most part, binge eating isn’t something that will destroy you, so long as it isn’t a habit. But even one day of binge eating can have a surprising impact on your health. A recent study at the University of Loughborough examined the effects of a high fat diet for one day on 15 different healthy people. The participants ate 78 % more calories than the recommended daily amount. They ate fried eggs, sausages, and bacon for breakfast, cheese sandwiches and sausage rolls for lunch, and burgers, pork pie snacks, and chocolate chip muffins for dinner.
Within a single day, the participants’ whole-body insulin levels decreased by 28 percent, which is a very significant amount. Your body needs insulin to transform food into energy. If your insulin levels decrease so suddenly, it will cause your pancreas to have to produce more energy which places an unnecessary burden on it. This can lead to your pancreas becoming dysfunctional and increase your chances of developing type-2 diabetes.
This all happens after one day of overeating. Your body will recover from this if it’s just one day; eating an entire pizza one or two times won’t give you diabetes. But if you choose to consistently overeat, it can definitely lead to some major complications including diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Always try to maintain a healthy and balanced it as much as possible for the sake of your body’s long term health.
