It’s never too early or too late to start teaching your children about how to eat a healthy diet. But you can’t teach kids like you would teach adults. It is often better to show them instead of telling them. Read on to learn about some tricks for teaching your children how to eat healthy.
Don’t just make rules make routines
It is not enough to just put healthy food on your child’s plate. You can tell them that they aren’t allowed to have soda all you want, but that is not really a long-term solution. If you restrict certain foods, they’ll just be more excited to have it when you’re not around. Instead, help them become a part of picking healthy foods. Take your kids shopping with you and have them pick out vegetables and fruits. Do this regularly, and your kids will incorporate buying healthy foods into their routine.
Show your children how to eat properly
Eating a healthy diet doesn’t matter much at all if you are not eating properly. As a parent, you have to teach your child how to prepare their plate. Don’t always make it for them, involve them in the process instead. Help them to make a plate that is nutritionally balanced and looks good.
Don’t label foods as “good” or “bad”
This one may throw some people for a loop. But you shouldn’t teach your children that certain foods are good or bad to eat. Good nutrition is about eating the right amount of food. Every food has its place, it just has to be regulated. Eating too much broccoli can be bad in its own right. Instead of teaching your kids that foods are good or bad, teach them what foods should be eaten frequently or infrequently.
Teach your children about portion size
This is one of the most important things you can teach your kids. Teaching them how much food they can eat for each meal, will stop them from transforming a healthy diet choice to an unhealthy one.
