How Figs Help in Preventing Constipation

We like to think of figs, otherwise known as anjeer, as a holiday fruit. Although they hail from Asia and Africa, it is pretty common to see them gracing the Christmas table. They’re also eaten as great snacks, and after dinner desserts. Well it turns out their popularity may not just be due to their taste. Figs are actually really great at eliminating constipation, which is exactly what you want to have after a heavy meal.

Constipation is a condition that occurs when a person has difficulties clearing their bowels. It is a pretty common affliction, especially for people who like to eat certain constipation inducing dishes, like spicy foods (looking at Southern India – about 22 percent of Indians suffer from regular constipation). For most people, constipation is a minor inconvenience and just the price you have to pay for an over laden meal. But constant or chronic constipation can lead to some pretty serious health consequences. It can result in itching of the bowels, pain, bleeding, and in the worst cases, anal fissures (that sounds painful right?).

Thankfully, you can treat constipation pretty easily if you have the right tools. That is where figs come to play. This wonderful fruit is packed with dietary fiber which helps to induce bowel movements. Figs are so potent with dietary fiber that just simply eating figs after a meal can help induce a bowel movement and provide some much needed relief. But you can also make figs into a home remedy to concentrate their power.
