Nutrient Rich Diets and Food for the Elderly!

As you grow older, your diets become more and more important. Your bodies need specific vitamins and minerals to maintain proper functionality and to keep healthy. Failing to get any of the proper nutrients as we get older can result in some pretty dire consequences. That being said, it can be difficult to make sure you’re getting all the proper nutrients. Crafting a good diet can be a challenge in any circumstance. Read below to see what makes for a good geriatric diet.

Nutrient rich geriatric diets

Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods, like fatty fish and almonds, can be some of the best things for elderly people to consume. The omega-3s have the ability to reduce inflammation and improve brain health. Eating omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week will enable getting the recommended intake.

Foods rich in calcium

Calcium is not just important for growing kids. It is an essential mineral for maintaining the health of bones as you get older. It can ward off age related diseases like osteoarthritis or osteosclerosis. Your body also helps to reduce your blood pressure. People tend to consume less calcium products as they grow older. This is partially due to people becoming more averse to eating and drinking certain dairy products as they get older. When your body becomes calcium efficient, it will begin to absorb calcium from your bones which makes them more fragile.

Fiber rich foods

Your digestive system becomes less optimal as you grow older. The gastrointestinal walls of your gastrointestinal tract thicken and the contractions become slower and reduce in frequency which can lead to constipation. Eating fiber promotes great digestion by helping to move food through the digestive tract easily
