Kollu Chutney

A few dishes cannot satisfy our taste buds in spite of being tasty and wholesome as few recipes demand something extra. While there are many pickles and chutneys that you can combine, at times you have to do something out of the ordinary. In India, breakfast like dosa, adai, idli which are prepared with rice or lentils are blanch, so without side dishes, some recipes are always incomplete.

These days most people prefer ketchup as their go-to side dish for their snacks or breakfast. However, ketchup has proven to contain a lot of sugar, equivalent to a fizzy drink. Hence, if you get bored eating peanut or coconut, you have kollu chutney for a change. Kollu is a Tamil word for horse gram. It is easily available like any other pulses and also very easy to prepare.

Health Benefits

Horse gram is helpful in reducing indigestion problems and body fat. It is known that regular consumption of these beans can also reduce blood glucose levels. This also helps in solving constipation problems and can expel small kidney stone.

Note: Pregnant women, persons who are recovering from tuberculosis, should not use horse gram. Coconut has Iron, zinc, fat and dietary fiber which helps to fend off weight gain by helping you feel fuller after the meals.

Ingredients

cup horse gram/ kollu: 1/2

2 tsp tamarind paste

cup freshly grated coconut: 1/4

tsp mustard seeds: 1

tsp black gram: 2

cloves garlic: 5

dry red chili: 4

tsp oil: 2

salt to taste

water as required

How To Make Kollu Chutney

  • In a pan, dry roast horse gram until they turn little dark than usual color  on low flame.
  • Transfer into a bowl.
  • In a medium wok, add oil and heat it.
  • Add black gram, red chilies.
  • Fry on a medium flame till black grams turn golden and then add garlic cloves and fry till they turn tender.
  • Transfer into a plate immediately and let the mixture cool down.
  • Grind them all together by adding salt, tamarind paste, grated coconut, and little water. Do not add more water.
  • In a separate wok for tempering. Heat the oil, add mustard seeds. After a few seconds, add tempering into ground chutney.
  • Tasty Kollu chutney is ready to serve with hot rice/idli/dosa.

In Punjab, horse gram is called Chana or Choley. It is a very popular dish all over the world.

Horse gram is varied and is originated from a tropical region, especially India and precisely the Himalayas. Horse gram has been known as one of the ancient legumes frequently prepared in south India.
