Hara Chana

Hara Channa

Hara chana is most simply a term used to describe green chick peas, members of the legume family Fabaceae. Normally, hara chana simply refers to the derived variation of green chick peas which is eaten all year around. But this recipe takes things up a notch. It spices up simple green chick peas into an actual meal filled with fresh vegetables and spices. Hara chana is considered to be tastier than other forms of chana as hara chana develops a distinctive slightly sweet taste when cooked.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups dry green gram - soaked overnight

2 onions – chopped

2 medium tomatoes – chopped

2-3 medium green chilies – chopped

2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves – chopped

Black salt to taste

1 tsp cumin powder – roasted

1 tsp chat masala

½ tsp red chili powder

2 tbsp lemon juice

How To Make Hara Chana

  1. Pressure cook the green chana in 3 cups of water and cook for 2-3 whistles or until they’re done.
  2. Transfer the greens into a kadai and simmer until all the water evaporates.
  3. Place the hot chana into a bowl.
  4. Add the tomatoes, onions, green chilies, black salt, coriander leaves, roasted cumin powder, chat masala, red chilli powder, and lemon juice to the bowl and mix well.
  5. Serve immediately.

Trivia

Traces of domesticated chickpeas have been found in Neolithic era pottery.
