Dad's New Zealand Mince Stew

During a cold night, the best thing to eat is Dad’s New Zealand mince stew. We call it a stew, but you might call it a chilli, a shepherd’s pie, or even a jambalaya. It doesn’t really matter what you call it though; it’s delicious and satiating like none other. Make a pot of this stew and you’ll be able to dip into it for a week or more depending on the size of the pot.

Health Benefits

The mince in this stew is what makes the stew worthwhile. While any minced meat will do, this recipe calls for beef. Beef has numerous health properties. It’s most amazing properties are that it is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, the most important of which is zinc, iron, and vitamin B12. Beef is also of course a great source of protein which is important because protein helps to build and repair muscles and cells in the body.

Ingredients

tbsp vegetable oil: 1

large onions – sliced: 3

large white onion: 1

lbs ground beef: 2

cloves garlic – chopped: 2

cup water: 1

cups ketchup: 2

cup beef stock: 1

tbsp teriyaki sauce: 2

tbsp black pepper: 3

tbsp curry powder: 1

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tbsp onion powder

1 tbsp all-purpose flour

1/2 cup water

How To Make Dad’s New Zealand Mince Stew

  • Heat oil in a large pot at a medium temperature.
  • Sauté the onions until they turn brown then remove them from the pot and set aside.
  • Add ground beef to the pot and cook until it is evenly browned.
  • Add garlic and cook for 2 mins.
  • Stir in browned onions and cook on high heat for 3-5 minutes.
  • Stir in 1 cup of water.
  • Reduce heat, cover, and let simmer for 20 mins.
  • Pourthe ketchup, beef stock, and teriyaki sauce.
  • Season with pepper, curry powder, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Cover, and cook for about 2 hrs.
  • Mix together 1 tbsp flour and 1/2 cup water, add to the stew.
  • Cook until it thickens.
  • Serve and enjoy!
