This recipe for homemade baked potato chips is easy and the fact that it is homemade makes it healthier. You start from the scratch and don’t need to use preservatives, unlike the ones you would buy from a store. You do not need to have a deep fryer before you can make excellent potato chips. It might surprise you but the oven can do the job. One of the attractions of the homemade baked potato chips is that they are thicker than the ones you buy from a store. And best of all, you can serve when they are still warm.

In addition to salt and pepper, there are other seasonings you can use. They include ground cumin, ancho chile powder, toasted sesame seeds and lots more. This recipe stores well. You can store it in a casserole and eat later, and it will still taste as delicious as freshly prepared.

medium potatoes, peeled: 3

oil: 1 tbsp

How To Make Baked Potato Chips

We will discuss two methods for making baked potato chips. There are slight differences in the methods (it is a recipe after all). You will get great results regardless of the method you use.

Method 1:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Cut the potatoes into 1/8-inch thick slices and place into a bowl.Toss with the oil.Add salt to season. Place the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  2. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Add more salt and pepper when you remove them from the oven.
  4. Cool slightly so they become crisper.

Method 2:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the potatoes into 1/8-inch thick slices.
  3. Boil water and cook the potatoes for about 5 minutes.
  4. Drain well. Season potatoes with the salt and pepper.
  5. Put the potato slices on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  6. Cool slightly. Serve.

Trivia

  1. Potato chips were created by mistake. In 1853, the railroad magnate Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt was eating at a resort in Saratoga Springs. He returned his fried potatoes back to the kitchen because he claimed that they were too thick. Chef George Crum, to annoy his rude guest, sliced some potatoes paper thin and added salt to them. Surprisingly, Vanderbilt loved it and it became a thing.
