Why Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids are Linked with Asthma?

For years now omega-3 fatty acids have been prized for their health benefits, especially those to do with the brain. But new research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids may be capable of reducing the symptoms of childhood asthma. Omega-6 fatty acids on the other hand may help aggravate your child’s asthmatic symptoms.

Researchers utilized 135 asthmatic children ranging from ages 5-12. The children were assessed at the beginning of the study, then twice more at three and six months. The assessment included children’s diet, asthma symptoms, and asthma medications. Blood samples were also taken, and the air pollutant levels of their homes were assessed.

The study ultimately determined that children intaking higher levels of omega-3 had milder reactions to typical asthmatic irritants, like indoor pollution, airborne pollens, etc. Omega-6 fatty acids were found to intensify the severity of a child’s asthmatic symptoms. It also increased the levels of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils is a white blood cell that is responsible for causing inflammation.

The study is truly elucidating, but it is incomplete. According to Dr. Emily P. Brigham the lead author of the study, future research will require more controls to gain a better understanding over exactly how omega-3 fatty acids are able to reduce asthma symptoms, besides the fact that omega-3s can reduce inflammation.

There are lots of ways to include omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. You can take supplements or simply eat omega-3 laden foods:

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish like salmon and tuna are some of the best sources for omega-3 fatty acids.

Avocado

Avocado is once again, one of the top fruits in the game. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is exactly what you want to eat when you’re suffering from respiratory complications.

Nuts and Seeds

Nut and seeds like almonds or chia seeds have pretty significant omega-3 fatty acid contents as well. They are great due to their versatility, you can include them in many different dishes.
