What Makes Japanese Diet so Spectacular?

The life expectancy of the average Japanese person is one of the highest in the world. There are several reasons for this, but one of the most important is the Japanese diet. Much like the Mediterranean diet, the Japanese diet is considered to be top tier and one of the best for your overall health. It is defined by its focus on fresh, whole, and unprocessed foods. There is very little refined sugar and foods in the traditional Japanese diet. There are plenty of sweets in Japan (looking at you pocky), so we’re not saying the Japanese people always eat the healthiest. This article is focusing on a traditional Japanese diet.

The Japanese diet is high in grains, vegetables, soy, and fish. There is very little red meat or high fatty foods in the diet. This lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as obesity. The focus on omega-3 fatty acids and good proteins also helps to stem the onset of age related diseases, especially those associated with the brain and quality of life. This includes Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, cancer, and diabetes.

Now you might be thinking that this diet sounds similar to most other good diets that you’ve heard about. Well overall, it is pretty similar to other top tier diets, like the Mediterranean diet or the vegetarian Chinese diet. But what really sets the Japanese diet apart, is its focus on seafood. Japan is an island nation; it cannot be understated exactly how much fish the Japanese eat. These are the people who invented sushi after all. Fish doesn’t just have omega-3 fatty acids; it also has plenty of vitamins, including vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to promote calcium absorption which builds strong bones and wards off conditions like osteoporosis or tooth decay. This is important when thinking of living a long life. The stronger your bones and faculties are, the more capable you will be able to live.
