Vetiver essential oil and its uses

Also called khus oil, vetiver oil is extracted from the plant vetiver. It is native to India and can grow five feet in height or more. It has a distinctive sharp and earthy fragrance. The essential oil is made from the roots of the plant. Vetiver oil is known for its soothing abilities.

Uses and benefits of vetiver oil

Here are some uses and benefits of vetiver oil.

  • Research has shown that vetiver oil increases alertness and function of the brain. If you struggle to focus, inhale vetiver oil. It will help to keep the brain more alert.
  • Put some drops of vetiver oil in a diffuser. This will help improve your breathing patterns when you sleep.
  • Vetiver oil is also known to help people who snore.
  • It is also used for treating anxiety. Vetiver oil, when mixed with any carrier oil and applied topically protects from tick bites as it has high toxicity to ticks. Tick bites cause Lyme disease.
  • Vetiver oil is also known to treat mental fatigue.
  • The oil contains powerful antioxidants and helps to decrease the signs of aging.
  • Vetiver oil is also known to provide relief from anxiety and has a calming effect on the brain.
  • It is very useful in aromatherapy practices.

How to use vetiver essential oil

  • Vetiver oil can be inhaled from an aromatherapy diffuser. It can also be applied topically.
  • It should be diluted by mixing it with a carrier oil before application. Coconut or jojoba oil make great carrier oils. 1-2 drops of vetiver oil should be mixed with 10 drops of carrier oil when you apply it on your skin.
  • Until and unless you are allergic to the vetiver plant, it is safe to use vetiver oil. Before application on the skin always do a patch test.
