The Vegan Diet and Why it’s Healthy for You?

The vegan diet has grown in popularity as of late for many reasons. Many people are deciding to make the switch to veganism to reduce their carbon footprint, eat higher quality food, lose weight, or prevent the development of certain diseases. If you are thinking about improving your diet or want to make consistently healthier eating choices, then you should consider switching to veganism.

What Is Veganism?

Veganism is less a diet, and more a lifestyle choice. It primarily involves excluding all forms of animal exploitation from your life. Any products that are derive from animal labor, cruelty, or animal bodies are avoided with veganism. This includes any food or clothing made from animal products. This means that you cannot eat any meat, eggs, or dairy while on a vegan diet. You also cannot use any cooking oils that may be derived from animal products.

What Makes Veganism Healthy

There are many health benefits to be had from a vegan diet. This is primarily due to the lack of animal products and heavy emphasis on vegetables. This potent combination has been proven to positively affect:

  • Weight Loss
Vegans are normally thinner people and have a lower BMI than non-vegans. This is likely due to the increased dietary fiber content in vegan diets, alongside the fact that you have to make more conscientious eating decisions as a vegan.
  • Blood Sugar and Type 2 Diabetes
Studies have shown that vegans tend to have lower blood sugar levels, higher sensititvy to insulin, and a 78% decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Heart Health
The lack of animal products helps to lower your “bad” LDL cholesterol and subsequently improve your heart health.
  • Cancer Risk
Vegans typically have increased antioxidant intake which lowers people’s risk for developing cancer.
