It is of vital importance to eat foods with the right nutrients during pregnancy. However, it is also important to pay attention to the right quantity of the nutrients that is necessary for the proper development of the baby. Iron is a critical nutrient that plays an important role in the growth and development of the fetus. Body requires iron since the red blood cells need a protein called hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the tissues and organs in the body. Hemoglobin synthesis requires iron.

Should you take iron tablets when pregnant?

  • Regularly consult with your doctor and inform him/her about your dietary habits. It is recommended to take a balanced diet that provides the body with the right nutrients in the correct quantities.
  • However, your doctor, at a part point in time during pregnancy, can recommend the consumption of iron supplements. It is advisable to consume these only with your doctor’s prescription and at the time specified. The consumption of iron tablets at the wrong stages can have adverse effects on the baby too so stick to what your doctor has to say.
  • Your doctor might recommend taking iron supplements if you live in a region where anemia is common or if your vegetarian or vegan diet does not provide you with sufficient quantities of nutrients.
  • Some women report cramps and stomach aches when taking iron supplements. It is best to consult your medical practitioner.
  • The consumption of iron supplements can also worsen your morning sickness and cause vomiting. Once again, make it a point to regularly follow up with your doctor and describe the condition.
  • Never take iron supplements unless prescribed by the doctor as excess consumption can have serious health hazards.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
