How to reduce high blood pressure during pregnancy

High blood pressure, also called hypertension is a common condition faced by many women during pregnancy. It can be of several different types. Amongst the most common causes of hypertension in pregnant women is obesity, smoking or drinking. We highly recommend getting in touch with your doctor who will be the best guide on the course of treatment. Here are some foods that will help you fight hypertension during pregnancy.

Foods to eat to fight hypertension during pregnancy

We highly recommend eating the following foods to keep blood pressure under control:

  • Foods that are rich in essential fatty acids are known to help relieve hypertension. These include avocado, chia seeds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts. Coconut oil, flaxseed oil, and olive oil are also rich in fatty acids.
  • Hypertension in pregnant women can also be caused by a deficiency of vitamin D. This can be overcome using foods that are rich in vitamin D content such as certain dairy products, cheese, and cereals.
  • It is highly recommended to include whole grains such as oats, millets, and whole wheat flour in your diet.
  • Natural yogurt, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese can also help lower high blood pressure.
  • You must also consume foods that are rich in calcium and magnesium. We recommend eating green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. It is a great idea to also include tomatoes, peas, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, and garlic in your diet.
  • You should also eat fruits such as strawberries, pineapples, apricots, apples, grapefruits, and pomegranates.
  • It is important to take a diet which is low in salt and sodium.
  • Consumption of alcohol and smoking during pregnancy have to be avoided.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent and fight high blood pressure during pregnancy.
