How To Treat Dry Eyes

Dry eyes is a very common condition and it occurs when the eyes are not able to produce enough tears. Tears provide lubrication to the eyes. If you have dry eyes, you will feel a stinging or burning sensation. Dry eyes can be experienced in air-conditioned rooms or when riding a bike or when you work on a computer for long hours. The treatment of dry eyes will make you feel comfortable and the treatment includes lifestyle changes and administering eye drops.

Symptoms of dry eyes

Stringy mucus in the eyes or around the eyes, redness in the eye, the urge to scratch or a stinging or burning sensation in the eyes are some symptoms of dry eyes. The other symptoms include sensitivity to light and experiencing difficulty wearing contact lenses. You may also experience watery eyes and difficulty in driving especially during night time. Among the other symptoms are the fatigue of the eye or your vision might be blurred. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should take the advice of your doctor who will be the best person to suggest the treatment for dry eyes.

Causes of dry eyes

When the eyes fail to produce an adequate amount of tears, you experience dry eyes. Tears are a mixture of mucus, water, and fatty oils. Tears help to make the surface of the eye smooth and protect the eyes against any infection. In some people, the cause of dry eyes is inadequate tear production while in others it could be the increased evaporation of tears.

How to soothe dry eyes

  • There are some preventive measures you can take. Do not allow your eyes to come in direct contact with air conditioner, fan, heater, and hairdryer.
  • Wear sunglasses or any other protective eyewear.
  • You should opt for eyeglasses that block wind and dry air from both the top and the sides.
  • Take breaks while working on the computer. If you are reading or working on a computer, take periodic breaks. Blink for a few seconds.
