How to take care of your nails this winter season

During the winter months, you need to take care of your skin to protect it from the wind and cold. You also need to take special care of your nails during the harsh winter months. Washing dishes, using alcohol-based sanitizers, hot water showers, use of nail polish removers, the harsh cold winds, and indoor heating systems— all play havoc with your nails. They cause the nails to chip, peel, and break.

Taking Care of Your Nails

  • When you apply a moisturizer to the body after taking a shower, make a habit to apply it to your nails and cuticles. When you apply a moisturizer after washing hands, apply the same to the nails also.
  • It is strongly recommended that you use moisturizers that are non-scented. Scented moisturizers make the skin and the nails dry. Soak the nails in warm water weekly. Allow them to remain in warm water for approximately 10 minutes. Then, apply olive oil to the nails and cuticles. Wear cotton gloves and leave them for about an hour. The nails will soak up the oil.
  • When you go outdoors, remember to wear gloves. This will help to retain the moisture in the nails.
  • Always use a nail polish remover that does not contain acetone.
  • It is important to not use your nails in the manner of a tool.
  • Staying hydrated is very important during the winter months. Drink a good 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Do not use nail polish on a constant basis. Take a break for a few weeks and allow the nails to breathe freely.
  • Keep the nails short and slightly rounded to prevent them from breaking.
  • Always remember to file your nails in the same direction.
  • Do not file the nails immediately after a shower as wet nails have a tendency to break easily.
  • Use rubber gloves while performing household chores such as washing dishes or mopping the floors.
