Here are Vitamins that can Help Relieve Constipation

Constipation occurs when there are infrequent bowel movements and there is trouble in passing stools. Occasional constipation can be dealt with lifestyle changes and home remedies like drinking a lot of water, engaging in physical activity, and consuming more fiber. Stool softeners or laxatives can also be used. There are certain vitamins that help to provide relief from constipation. These vitamins function as natural stool softeners. However, you should never consume vitamins or supplements without consulting your doctor as he is the best person to guide you.

Vitamins to relieve constipation

  • Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that helps to soften the stool. However, the intake of an excessive amount of vitamin C can be harmful. It can cause stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and nausea. You should consult your doctor for the right recommended dose.
  • Vitamin B-5 is also known to provide relief from constipation. It stimulates muscle contractions in the digestive system. This, in turn, helps to move stool through the bowels. For the recommended dose of vitamin B-5, consult your doctor.
  • The deficiency of vitamin B-12 can also cause constipation. Consuming foods that are rich in vitamin B-12 also provides relief from constipation. The foods rich in vitamin B-12 are salmon, tuna fish, trout, and beef liver.
  • Vitamin B-1 helps in digestion which can provide relief from constipation. When the level of vitamin B-1 decreases in the body, the process of digestion slows down.
  • Folic acid is also called vitamin B-9. It helps to cure constipation as it stimulates the formation of digestive acids. You are advised to eat the foods that are rich in folic acid. These foods are also rich in fiber: spinach, fortified rice, fortified breakfasts are all foods rich in folic acid.
