Here are the Best Foods to Increase your HDL

HDL stands for High-Density Lipoprotein and refers to good cholesterol and the kind of cholesterol that is needed by the body. It is a sort of detox agent for the cholesterol in the body. When the HDL is at a healthy level in the blood, it helps to remove the extra cholesterol that is built up in the arteries and sends it to the liver. The liver finally throws it out from the body. This helps in reducing the risk of heart attack, heart disease, and stroke. There are some foods which should be consumed to increase the level of HDL in the body.

Foods to increase HDL

  • Always prefer extra virgin olive oil in comparison to other fats and oils but make sure that the cooking is done at a low temperature as olive oil is not suitable for cooking at high temperatures.
  • Olive oil can be used in salad dressings and sauces. It can also be used as a flavoring agent in cooked foods. It can also be added to soups. It is very rich in calories and so should be used in moderation.
  • Cereals, brown rice, and bran increase the level of HDL in the body. This is so because these foods contain huge amounts of fiber. Fiber helps to lower the level of bad cholesterol.
  • Fruits that are rich in fiber such as apples, prunes, and pears increase the level of HDL. You can also add these fruits into oatmeal or cereals. You can also make a smoothie with these fruits.
  • Beans and legumes also contain a lot of fiber. Kidney beans, black beans, and lentils help to increase HDL level in the body.
