Gestational Diabetes: Here are the foods you should eat

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects only pregnant women. Women who have gestational diabetes need to be very careful about their diet. During pregnancy, the human body is naturally resistant to insulin and if a woman suffers from gestational diabetes, she needs to limit her carbohydrate intake.

The condition occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin which results in the rise of the sugar levels in the blood. This can have harmful effects for both the mother and the baby. The risk of this condition can be reduced by adopting a healthier lifestyle. It is best to consult your healthcare practitioner who’ll be the best guide when it comes to eating right. Here are some foods that you can consider eating.

Include proteins

It is a great idea to include proteins in the diet since they will maintain sugar levels in the blood. It is very important to watch out for the intake of carbs. The meals consumed should have lean proteins and none of the meals should be skipped.

Which foods to eat and what to avoid

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables must be included in the diet and it is also best to avoid processed food.

  • Fast foods, fried foods, alcohol, and starchy foods including rice and potatoes are best avoided.
  • Women with gestational diabetes can also eat tofu, peas, and eggs too.
  • Sweetened beverages and sodas should be avoided.
