Foods that Affect your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition that affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. If left untreated, hypertension can give rise to some pretty unpleasant symptoms, such as, headaches, cardiovascular disease, vision problems, chest pain, difficult or labored breathing, irregular heartbeat, and even blood in the urine. You can affect your hypertension by adjusting your diet. You are what you eat after all. Below are some foods that you should avoid if you are suffering from high blood pressure:

Foods to Avoid with Hypertension

Salt

Sodium is one of the foods that we are routinely warned about because it can lead to hypertension. If you are suffering from high blood pressure, you should limit your daily sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day. The average American consumes nearly twice that amount on a daily basis.

Some of the saltiest foods out there are:

  • Deli meat
  • Vegetable juices
  • Frozen pizza
  • Canned goods

Processed Meat

It turns out that a lot of deli meat is processed and is typically filled with sodium. Make sure that the meat you purchase is fresh, not processed.

Pickles
The key to preserving any food, is especially by pickling process. This means that pickles are often over laden with sodium and key perpetrator of hypertension.

Canned Goods
Canned goods are one of the most convenient food products in your kitchen. But their convenience factor is sadly not enough to overcome the fact that they have a too high sodium content.

Sugar

Processed sugar, especially that used in sugary drinks can lead to some pretty serious health problems that will make you want to avoid it, including cardiac arrest, obesity, and hypertension
