Dried Apple and Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most devastating medical conditions across the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in the world by the year 2030. The cases of people suffering from diabetes has risen from being 108 million people in 1980 to 422 million people in 2014. That is a truly staggering amount, and bears looking into.

Diabetes is a condition where either your pancreas is not producing enough insulin (this is known as Type – 1 diabetes) or your body is not able to effectively use the insulin your producing (this is known as Type -2 diabetes). Diabetes can be pretty bad for your health if left untreated, you can easily enter a state of diabetic shock where you pass away in your sleep. The best way to regulate your diabetes is to pay careful attention to your diet. You want to avoid eating certain foods that you know are prone to spiking your blood sugar levels. Typically, this means staying away from starchy foods, foods high in sugar, and carbohydrates.

Fruit is considered to be safe to eat so long as you eat it in moderation. But dried fruit, like dried apples is not recommended for people with diabetes. This is basically because, dried fruits have less water in them than normal fruits. This inevitably gives the dried fruit a higher glycemic index. Basically, you can think of eating dried fruit as eating highly concentrated fruit. The thing you want to avoid the most as a diabetic is eating food with too much sugar.

In the long run, dried fruits are ok to eat in moderation, but they are a lot less safe than fresh fruits. As a diabetic, you might have to avoid the trail mix.
