Curry leaves are food additives that are added to food to increase its flavor. They are highly nutritious and contain vitamin A and C, iron, calcium, folic acid, and fiber. In India, it is one condiment that is a part of most meals.

There are many health benefits of curry leaves especially when you consume them while pregnant. Eating curry leaves will lower the risk of premature birth, anemia, and infections.

  • It is highly beneficial to consume curry leaves during pregnancy but is recommended that you consult your doctor first who will be the best to decide. You should always make it a point to seek your doctor’s opinion before making even small changes to your diet as it can potentially affect the health of your baby as well.
  • Curry leaves are helpful in maintaining cholesterol levels in the body. They also have antibacterial properties and also smoothen the processes of the digestive system.
  • Curry leaves remove harmful bacteria such as E. coli present in the gastrointestinal tract. These bacteria can be harmful to the baby.
  • Curry leaves are also rich alkaloids which stimulate blood flow and help in the secretion of a serum-like substance that will protect the walls of the intestine from attacks by bacteria and inflammation.
  • They also prevent diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
  • They are also rich sources of vitamin C and fiber.

Important things to keep in mind when consuming curry leaves during pregnancy

  • Excessive consumption of curry leaves can weaken the roots of the hair which will result in hair loss. It could also increase the level of sugar in the body.
  • You can consume curry leaves during pregnancy but in moderate amounts.
  • They are also rich sources of carbohydrates but if consumed in excessive quantities could cause an imbalance in sugar levels which could, in turn, affect the lipid profile in the body.
