Colorectal Cancer and How Garlic, Leeks, and Onions Help!

Colorectal cancer is an umbrella term to designate any type of cancer that takes place in the colon or rectum. Colon is the 6 ft long tube of muscle that connects the small intestines to the rectum. Colon and rectum known as the large intestine which is primarily responsible for processing waste and emptying your bowel. Rectum is the tube that connects the colon to the anus. It received stool from the colon and prepares it for evacuation. When cancer begins in the colon it is referred to as colon cancer, and when it begins in the rectum it is referred to as rectal cancer.

The cancer occurs when cells in the colon and the rectum begin to grow abnormally. It can be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Other diseases
  • Heredity
  • Hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer
  • Diet
  • Chemical exposure
  • History of certain types of surgery
  • History of colon cancer
  • Lifestyle
  • Family history
  • Radiation

The specifics for each of these causes are varied and dense. There are a lot of sub factors that determine if you will start to develop cancer. But though you can develop cancer through a myriad of ways, you can prevent it and treat it through several ways as well. One of these best ways is to alter your diet. You can make some simple changes and include garlic, leeks, and onions in your diet. These three veggies work together to actually prevent and treat colorectal cancer.

The plants of garlic, onions and leeks have phytochemicals which can reduce bowel cancer and other colorectal cancers. The chemicals that make these veggies particularly pungent are basically sulfur compounds and flavonoids. Historically, they have played a key role in keeping your cells healthy when they’re dividing and replicating.
