Can you drink Chamomile tea during pregnancy?

Chamomile tea is an herbal tea which has several health benefits. However, women who are pregnant need to consult their doctor before consuming herbal tea as some of the herbs might be harmful to the baby. Chamomile tea is generally considered safe but your doctor is the best judge to advise you. This is because the risks associated with herbal tea consumption during pregnancy haven’t been studied well.

Chamomile tea is made from the flowers of the Chamomile plant. The plant and its flowers are very similar to those of plant daisy. Romans Chamomile is also used for making herbal tea but German Chamomile is the most used kind. The heads of the flowers are cut and then allowed to dry in the sun. They are crumbled and stored in an airtight jar. Herbal tea is made using this powder and boiling water.

Health benefits of Chamomile benefits

  • Chamomile tea can relieve muscle pain and cramps. It also helps to relax your nerves.
  • It improves immunity and resistance. Chamomile helps the body fight infections and increases the resistance of the body.
  • It cures insomnia. It has a mild sedative effect and soothes the nerves, allowing you to sleep better.
  • It is known to cure mouth ulcers. Rinse your mouth with Chamomile tea twice a day and see the miraculous effects it has on mouth sores and ulcers.
  • It is also known to prevent heart disease and cancer. Chamomile is a powerful antioxidant and reduces the risk of cancer. It also contains polyphenols that prevent heart disease.

Side-effects of drinking Chamomile tea when pregnant

  • Excessive consumption of Chamomile tea can lead to problems in the circulatory system of the baby.
  • It could make you drowsy as it has a mild sedative effect.
  • It is known to trigger allergic reactions such as red itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and runny nose.
  • It can also lead to miscarriage and premature birth as it is known to trigger uterine contractions.
