Are You Eating Enough Flavonoid Rich Foods?

Bioflavonoids are “polyphenolic” plant derived compounds that are more commonly referred to as simply, flavonoids. There are between 4,000-6,000 different types of flavonoids that are used for various health purposes, supplements, and medicine. You can obtain flavonoids naturally via your diet. Flavonoids are found in certain fruits, veggies, and other types of foods, including red wine and dark chocolate.

The biggest benefit of flavonoids is their potent antioxidant content. This is why flavonoids are able to play such a substantial role in maintaining a person’s health. Antioxidants are responsible for fighting free radicals and preventing them from damaging the body. Antioxidants are especially beneficial for preventing cancer and dealing with viruses and allergies.

Flavonoids and Free Radicals

The antioxidant component of bioflavonoids, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids are responsible for killing free radicals that can cause cancer. Free radicals are types of toxins that are contained in the body which can damage health cells. This type of cellular damage is known as oxidative stress and it can cause the cells to reproduce improperly. Killing free radicals doesn’t just stop cancer from developing.

Flavonoids and Allergies

Flavonoids also play a pretty significant role in reducing allergic diseases and their symptoms. Some of the more significant allergies are:

  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Allergic asthma

Allergic diseases are often developed due to the buildup of oxidative stress in the body. Flavonoids help to scavenge free radicals which stabilizes their reactive oxygen species. This can significantly reduce the quantity of allergic reactions a person normally experiences. On top of that, flavonoids have also been shown to reduce inflammatory responses that are some of the primary causes of diseases like asthma.

With so many health benefits, including flavonoids in your diet is absolutely important. Fruits and vegetables are rich in flavonoids, and that is why it becomes important to include atleast a few fruits and vegetables in your diet every day.
