Kosher salt Recipe

It is also called cooking salt or rock salt. It is a coarse-grained salt that is made from salt crystals. It does not contain iodine and is thus not iodized salt. It is considered to be useful for sodium reduction. Kosher salt is not used for baking.

Kosher salt needs to be stored in a cool and dry place away from moisture. So it is best if you store it in an airtight jar.

Culinary Uses

  • It is coarse and has a deep and full flavor which means that it needs to be added in a smaller amount to the dishes.
  • It dissolves in food in lesser time. It sticks to the food better and hence dissolves quickly.
  • As Kosher salt has a pure flavor and does not possess the bitter and metallic taste contributed by fluoride, iodine or dextrose, it is used in cooking and is often preferred over table salt. Iodine is widely known to add a metallic taste to the delicacies it is added to. Kosher salt has a clean taste owing to the lack of iodine.
  • Kosher salt is known to have much coarser and wider grains as compared to table salt. This means that it will add a salty flavor that is also gentle. It is widely believed that Kosher salt enhances the flavor of food in a real sense while table salt only ends up making it salty.
  • It is used as a seasoning agent in several dishes.
  • When you substitute table salt for Kosher salt, the quantity needs to be reduced to half as it is coarse.
