dried thyme Recipe

Thyme is related to basil, lavender, mint, rosemary, and sage. The plant is believed to be native to Asia, southern Mediterranean area, and North Africa. There are several different varieties of thyme including Spanish Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Garden Thyme, and Moroccan. Dried thyme is also known for its exotic essential oil. It is said that the ancient Egyptians made use of thyme for a variety of medicinal purposes and for culinary purposes too. Experts believe that thyme was an essential component of the embalming agent used in the mummification process.

There are certain herbs which lose their flavor when dried and are better used fresh. However, thyme is known to retain its flavors and spiciness even when dried. This is because the drying process changes the plant tissue structures and increases the mobility of the essential oil stored inside. This increases the overall flavor in the dried herb.

When stored properlyin an insulated food jar, dried thyme will last 1 to 3 years.
