This Meen Moilee with Steamed Rice is a Kerala styled fish draped in coconut curry. The curry is flavored with curry leaves, turmeric powder and green chili. Finally, the curry is served with some steaming rice that make it an amazing treat to have during dinnertime and lunchtime meals.

Ingredients

tablespoon of coconut oil: 1

teaspoon of black mustard seeds: 1

teaspoon of urad dal: 2

teaspoon of curry leaves: 1

tablespoon of julienne and ginger: 2

tablespoon of julienne and green chili: 1

tablespoon of sliced onions: 8

tablespoon of coconut milk powder: 10

teaspoon of turmeric powder: 1/2

tablespoon of blanched and chopped tomatoes: 7

pieces of pomfret fillet, weighing 70 to 80 gram each, and without skin: 6

tablespoon of chopped coriander: 2

pinch of fine sugar: 1

salt for some taste

tablespoon of basmati rice: 8

banana leaf for plating purposes: 1

How To Make Meen Moilee with Steamed Rice

  • Heat coconut oil inside a pan with a heavy bottom.
  • Once the coconut is heated, add urad dal and black mustard seeds to the pan. Make sure that the urad daal is golden brown in color.
  • Once the urad daal gets golden brown in color, add curry leaves to the pan.
  • Add green chili julienne and ginger julienne to the mix
  • Add sliced onion to the pan and sauté them till they get golden brown in color.
  • Add turmeric powder and coconut milk to the mixture.
  • Simmer for around 2 to 3 minutes, and add some tomatoes.
  • Add fish fillets to the pan and simmer for another minute.
  • Add corianders and adjust the seasoning.
  • Serve the dish hot along with some steamed rice.

Pomfret fish belongs to the family of Bramidae, which is host to around 20 species of fishes. These species are found in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean. These fishes grow up to 1 meter long at instances.
