Ingredients

Butter: 1 slab

onions: 1 large or 2 small ones

red cabbage: 1

green apple: 1

ground all spices: 1 tsp

a pinch grated nutmeg

muscovado sugar: 3 tsp

red wine – half a glass

water: 1/2 cup

red currant jelly: 2 tbsp

boiled chestnuts: 100 gm

Water as needed

chestnuts: 100 gm

salt to taste

How To Make Braised Red Cabbage with Apple & Chestnuts

For Boiling the Chestnuts

  1. Take a large pot.
  2. Add 6 to 7 glasses of water in it.
  3. Add salt.
  4. Add chestnuts in the pot and let them boil.
  5. Fork the chestnuts to check if they are done.
  6. Set these aside until they are needed for the braised red cabbage with apple & chestnuts.

For the Braised Red Cabbage with Apple & Chestnuts

  1. Take a large pot.
  2. Put it on low heat and melt the butter into it.
  3. Slice onion into large pieces and throw it into the pan.
  4. Cook the onion until it turns translucent and slightly golden brown.
  5. Remove big cabbage stems and chop it into thin slices.
  6. Add the cabbage into the pot.
  7. Take the green apple and peel if off.
  8. Remove the seeds and grate the apple.
  9. Add it into the pot as well.
  10. Add the boiled chestnuts into the pot.
  11. Season the ingredients with ground all spices, a pinch of grated nutmeg and muscovado sugar.
  12. Add red wine and water into the pot.
  13. Mix everything well.
  14. Cover the pot and let the braised red cabbage with apple & chestnuts cook on low heat for at least an hour.
  15. After an hour, remove the lid and add red currant jelly into the pot.
  16. Coat the braised red cabbage with apple & chestnuts with the jelly and serve it out into a large dish!
