If you are familiar with western Indian snacks, you have surely tasted or at least heard about bhelpuri. Bhelpuri is a tasty snack made of puffed rice, vegetables, and a tangy tamarind sauce. It is typically sold in street carts throughout the country. It is often identified with the beaches of Mumbai. The taste of the puffed rice, sev (an Indian snack consisting of long, thin strands of gram flour, deep-fried and spiced), and veggies, blend perfectly with the salty, sweet, sour, and spicy seasonings. Bhelpuri is the ultimate healthy and light snack that takes less than 15 minutes to
prepare.

Puffed rice cereal is low in calories, fat-free and sodium-free. While it is not a very good source of protein or fiber or a significant source of any vitamins or minerals.

Ingredients

puffed rice: 4 cups

chopped tomatoes: 1 cup

boiled potatoes: 1 cup

chopped onions: 1/2 cup

Peanuts: 1/2 cup

green chilis: 2

ground turmeric: 1 tsp

tamarind chutney: 2 tbsp

sev: 2 cups

salt: to taste

green chutney: 2 tbsp

How To Make Bhelpuri

  1. In a large bowl, mix the puffed rice, tomato, potato, onion, peanuts, and green chilies together.
  2. Add the turmeric and tamarind chutney.
  3. And green chutney and salt to taste.
  4. Mix the entire contents of the bowl well.
  5. Garnish with plenty of sev.
  6. Serve immediately.

Tip

If you have leftover chutney, you can store them in a Vaya Tyffyn box. Place it in the steel tiffin box and store overnight in the fridge. These tiffin boxes will keep your vegetables and spice mix fresh for use the next day.

Trivia

There are many versions of bhelpuri. The dry version is known as ‘bhadang’, which is spiced with lemon juice, coriander, and onions. The Kolkata version is called ‘jhaal muri’. Another type is known in Bangalore as churumuri or churmuri.
