Why Eating a Plant Based Diet is Best to Reduce the Risk of Gingivitis

Recent research has found evidence suggesting that committing to a plant based diet can help to reduce the risk of obtaining gingivitis. Gingivitis is a pretty regular gum condition that is the result of inflammation occurring in the gums or gingiva. The condition can be caused by a variety of situations. But the most common cause of gingivitis is the accumulation of plaque and bacteria building up in the gums and teeth. Gingivitis is a non-destructive periodontal disease, but it can be truly harmful if steps aren’t taken to treat it in time. In the worst case scenario, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis.

If you have gingivitis, you can normally treat it by utilizing antibacterial toothpaste or an antibacterial mouthwash. You should also floss your teeth as floss is the best way to remove plaque buildup. Thankfully, the treatment is pretty simple, but ideally, a person should avoid obtaining gingivitis in the first place.

The new research has shown that you can avoid gingivitis altogether by subjecting yourself to the proper diet. The study held a trial where 30 patients who were suffering from gingivitis ate a specific diet for four weeks. The diet was formed of low processed carbs, animal proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D, antioxidants, fibers, and plant nitrates. For the most part it is a pretty standard nutritionally balanced diet. According to the research results, the participants who utilized the new diet had a noticeable drop in gingivitis induced bleeding of the gums. As a bonus, the participants eating the optimal diet also experienced an increase in vitamin D values and a slight decrease in their weight.

The next time your gums are filling bad, consider looking at your dietary habits as part of your evaluation of your condition.
