What are Flavonoids? Here is What You Need to Know!

Food products that are plant-based often contain colored phytochemicals called flavonoids that are responsible for their colors. But why are these colored compounds important? Well, flavonoids not only make your food looks delicious but also make it extremely healthy too. Thanks to the presence of large amounts of antioxidants, such foods help reduce the damage caused by free radicals which can result in the prevention of diseases such as cancer. The consumption of foods rich in flavonoids is also beneficial for those with diabetes and osteoporosis. Here are some foods that are incredibly rich in flavonoids and thus super healthy.

Tea

Several varieties of tea including red, green, and black tea are great sources of catechins.

Berries

Purple, blue, and red berries are particularly rich in flavonoids. Black grapes and blackberries are very rich in flavonoids including catechin and epicatechin. Red grapes, raspberries, and cherries are rich in cyandin and anthocynadins.

Tree fruits

Fruits that grow on trees are known to be particularly rich in flavonoids. Citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits must be regularly consumed. Plums, apricots, peaches, pears, and apples are great foods to eat daily as well!

Nuts and beans

Certain nuts and beans are known to be great sources of flavonoids as well. Experts particularly recommend eating the darker beans including kidney beans which have lots of flavonoids. Cashews, pistachios, and walnuts make great foods too.

Spices and vegetables

While spices are generally used in small quantities, they can certainly help add flavonoids to your diet. Parsley and thyme are two spices worth a special mention. Vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants must be regularly consumed. Experts highly recommend consuming vegetables such as anti-chokes and celery which are good sources of flavones. Green and red onions, broccoli, and okra are also packed with powerful phytochemicals.
