Sinus Issues: Foods that Help Recover from Sinusitis

Sinus issues can strike at just about any moment, it doesn’t matter how you are feeling. Your nose can become stuffed up, runny, or sore due to allergies, bacterial infection, flu, a change in weather, etc. Sinusitis is an umbrella term to describe the condition where your sinus cavities become inflamed. This condition typically results in headaches, stuffed, and runny noses – more often considered to be simple misery by most people. There are of course medicines you can purchase to treat sinusitis, but you can also treat it naturally by adjusting your diet. Read on to see what the best foods are to use to treat sinusitis.

Best Foods to Treat Sinusitis

Water

The first thing any diet meant to treat sinusitis should include is water. Water is needed to keep your body hydrated and to flush out toxins. Sinusitis is caused by inflammation in your nasal passage, when you are dehydrated, your body takes water from essential sources like your nose and worsens the inflammation.

Pineapple

Pineapple and other citric fruits are filled with antioxidants which play a major role in protecting the delicate mucus membranes from damage. The enzymes contained in pineapple play an additional role of breaking down irritants built up in your sinuses to reduce inflammation.

Peppers

You probably don’t need to be told this yourself. Just about everyone has experienced the nasal relief provided by eating spicy food. The capsaicin found in peppers reduces the inflammation in your nasal passageways, eases pain, and temporarily opens up your passageways.

Garlic

Garlic and onions function very similarly to peppers and reduce your inflammation and pain. Unlike peppers though, garlic doesn’t contain capsaicin. It contains allicin, a sulfuric compound that has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, the perfect combination to reduce inflammation.
