Should You Use Goat Milk Formula For Weaning?

It is recommended to only use breastmilk or formula if your baby is less than 6 months old. It is important to consider that babies below one year of age are at an increased risk of experiencing allergic reactions. Therefore, it is always best to wait.

Also, remember to consult your doctor who will be the best person to guide you in this regard. Do not change your baby’s diet without consulting the doctor first as this can hamper his/her growth and development and have serious consequences.

  • When the baby is over a year old, you might (though it is not needed) use other milk types. It is not recommended to use goat’s milk for a baby younger than 6 months and it is also not recommended using it regularly for a baby between the age of 6 to 12 months.
  • Neither goat milk nor cow milk can replace breastmilk and should only be used with your doctor’s consultation considering the age of the baby.
  • Goat’s milk formula provides vitamin A, selenium, and niacin. However, Goat’s milk has a high amount of sodium much like cow milk and is very high in potassium and chloride milk as well. This makes it unfit for consumption by babies as it can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and can even lead to poor development and anemia.
  • Formulas are believed to be better in nutrition. Goat milk might be relatively poor in nutrition with an inadequate amount of nutrients. Goat milk’s formula adjusts the nutritional value of goat’s milk so that it can meet the needs of humans.
  • When goat’s milk was used before the infant formulas came into the picture, higher infant mortality rates were observed.
  • Goat milk formula has probiotic properties that are similar to breast milk. It also has anti-infection properties like breastmilk.
  • Goat’s milk formula is believed to be easily digestible. This is because it does not contain agglutinin.
