Should you take triphala during pregnancy or when breastfeeding?

Triphala is a medicinal herb that has been used for curing numerous ailments. Triphala has been used in Ayurvedic medicine and finds use in treating stomach ailments and dental cavities. It is made from a mixture of dried fruits of three plants: amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki. It is also known to help treat inflammation and constipation. It can potentially help fight cancer and boosts the immune system as it is high in vitamin C. It has many health benefits but the herb should be taken only after consulting with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can you take triphala if you are pregnant or breastfeeding?

  • You should not take triphala when you are pregnant as it can increase the risk of a miscarriage.
  • The consumption of triphala during pregnancy could lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea. It could also be a cause of miscarriage as it stimulates muscle contractions in the uterus. It can also cause allergic reactions like breath shortness, itching in the skin, and swelling in the throat. It could also raise the heartbeat of the baby which would prove harmful.
  • It is not advisable for breastfeeding mothers to take triphala as haritaki and bibhitaki can prove dangerous.
  • Breastfeeding mothers should not take triphala as the herb may pass to the baby through breast milk.
  • Triphala can also disturb the intestines. You could also feel tired, experience nausea or have a headache.
  • It could cause health problems for both mothers and the baby. If you wish to consume this herb while you are feeding your baby, you should seek opinion from your doctor who will be the best guide when it comes to deciding if triphala would be safe for you.
