Red wine has the ability to inhibit the synthesis of endothelin, a protein that deposits at along the inner walls of your blood vessels. When this occurs, it can lead to atherosclerosis.

Red wine is also rich in procyanidins, a type of phenol which is connected to the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which further reduces your chances of developing cardiovascular diseases.

The phenols contained in red wine do more than just help reduce your LDL cholesterol. They also play a role in preventing platelet aggregation. This works as a natural counter to thromboses, the formation of blood clots inside the blood vessels, that can obstruct the flow of blood.

Not only does red wine have anti-inflammatory properties, it also functions similarly to aspirin, as a blood thinner. It may even be a better blood thinner than aspirin which is normally taken as a preventative measure against heart attacks.
