Mental health during pregnancy: What Should You Eat?

Pregnancy brings a mix of feelings: worry, anxiety, and happiness. It is necessary that you should eat properly, get adequate exercise, and take enough sleep. Apart from eating wholesome nutritious food, it also helps if you can include food that will keep depression at bay.

Tips to remember

  • It is very important to adopt a healthy lifestyle and eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  • It is extremely important to treat mental health issues during pregnancy. Mothers who feel depressed, anxious or face any other issue must consult their doctor immediately and should not try to treat themselves.
  • They should also refrain from the consumption of alcohol and drugs as the doctor is the best judge to prescribe any drug during pregnancy. All drugs can cause harm to the growing baby.
  • It is advisable to talk to your doctor about your overall health and discuss any mental health issues.
  • Exercise, yoga, and meditation are helpful in dealing with stress and should be followed only after discussion with your doctor.
  • Taking care of your mental health is extremely important as if you are mentally healthy, you will be able to manage the challenges that pregnancy presents.
  • If you have any negative thoughts, feel depressed, have panic attacks or are anxious it is highly recommended that you see your doctor.
  • It is a great idea to spend time with family and friends. Talking to friends and sharing your feelings with your loved ones helps a lot.
  • Sleep well and eat a balanced diet.
  • Mental illness during pregnancy can have adverse effects on the health of both the mother and the child so it is very important that the diagnosis and treatment begins in a timely manner.
  • You should never feel ashamed to talk to your doctor or counselor as dealing with it alone can pose more serious problems.
  • While it is normal to feel anxious at times, if this goes on continuously or you are unable to deal with it, seek medical help as quickly as you can. Remember that these problems are treatable.
  • Some believe that stress during pregnancy can affect neural connectivity in the brain of the baby.
