Keto Flu : Here’s Everything you Need to Know About Keto Flu

Keto diet is a popular method to lose weight and maintain health. In this diet, you consume high amounts of fat, reasonable amounts of protein, and take carbohydrates at the minimum level. But the body needs carbohydrates and there are some side-effects. The side-effects are known as carb flu or keto flu. These appear at the beginning of the diet and you might end giving up the keto diet. However, here are the causes of keto flu and how you can feel better.

The causes of keto flu

Consuming lower amounts of carbohydrates leads to your body using ketones for energy. The breaking down of the fat by the body results in the formation of a byproduct call ketone. This is the primary source of energy instead of glucose when you are on a keto diet. Under normal healthy conditions, the body uses ketones only if no glucose is available.

When you are on the keto diet, the level of insulin drops in the blood and there is an increase in the frequency of urination. This happens because there is more quantity of sodium in the urine due to the low level of insulin. The loss of water and sodium is one side effect of the keto diet. The key symptoms of the keto flu include weakness, inability to focus, irritability, dizziness, and headache.  The feeling of nausea and difficulty in sleeping are the other side effects.

How to get rid of keto flu symptoms

Stay hydrated and make up for the lost water and salts by the body. As soon as you experience cramps or dizziness add half teaspoon salt to a glass of water and drink. It is best to take enough sleep and cut down on your caffeine intake. Bathing before going to bed will also help to calm down the nerves. it is also best to consult with your doctor who will be the best judge on your particular situation.
