How Red Onions are Great for Controlling Your Blood Sugar Levels

People who suffer from Type -1 and Type-2 diabetes have to spend a lot of their energy and time focusing on their blood sugar levels. Spikes in their blood sugar can lead to severe health conditions including, coma or blindness. Insulin injections are mandatory for diabetics to be able to live a healthy lifestyle. But an over reliance on insulin can easily lead to insulin intolerance, and make insulin injections less effective over time. Instead of increasing the amount of insulin they’re injecting, diabetics should focus on modifying their diets to help regulate their blood sugar levels. One of the best blood sugar level regulating foods to include in your diet are red onions. Read on to see what makes red onions so good at regulating your blood sugar levels.

Why Red Onions Are Good At Regulating Blood Sugar Levels

Red onions offer a wide variety of overall health benefits that holistically improve your blood sugar levels.

Low Glycemic Index

Red onions have a low glycemic index count of 10. This means they affect your blood sugar level extremely slowly. Foods are rated on the glycemic index between 0-100, with 0 being the best for glycemic health. The lower the number, the slower the food effects glycemic index. Lower glycemic foods require less insulin which helps your body regulate blood sugar levels. It also results in your body storing less fat.

Red Onions Contain Chromium

Red onions are a fantastic source of chromium, a trace element that has the ability to control glucose levels. This makes it a great mineral for people who are insulin intolerant. Not including chromium rich foods in your diet can lead to insulin resistance and a subsequent result in blood sugar control, and a worsening of diabetic symptoms.
