Here’s Why Pregnant Women Need Vitamin-D Rich Food and More Sunshine

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that is required by the human body. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of phosphate and calcium. It is very important during pregnancy as it helps in the development of the baby’s kidneys, bones, heart, teeth, and nervous system. Vitamin D naturally occurs in some food and it is also produced using sunlight. Most of us are dependent on sunlight for the production of vitamin D. Every individual has his own specific requirements of vitamin D.

Pregnant women should consume foods that are rich in vitamin D. These include eggs and oily fish such as salmon. However, ensure that the fish do not have high levels of mercury as it can hamper the baby’s growth and development. Always consult your doctor before you make any changes to your diet during pregnancy.

Vitamin D from Sunshine

Sunlight is considered to be the best source of vitamin D. Pregnant women should also get some sunshine to help the body produce vitamin D as they might not get enough vitamin D from food. Do not always keep your skin covered as this will lead to the deficiency of vitamin D. The amount of time you need to spend in the sun to meet the required quantity of vitamin D varies from person to person and is also dependent upon the type of skin, the time of year, and the time of the day you spend in the sun.

Vitamin D deficiency

The deficiency of vitamin D during pregnancy could result in preterm birth. The intake of low amounts of vitamin D can cause rickets in the child.

It is always best to obtain vitamins from the food we eat. However, if the requirement of the vitamin is not met, you should consult your doctor who will prescribe vitamin supplements if this is the case. You should never start taking vitamin supplements on your own.
