Here’s Everything You Need to Know about Fruit Allergy

An allergy is a reaction towards a particular substance by the immune system of the body. The substances are called allergens and could be chemicals, foods, and pollens. An allergic reaction to fruits is commonly called Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). The allergy begins when the immune system of the person reacts inappropriately to the proteins in the fruits. This results in an allergic reaction. Oral Allergy Syndrome is also called pollen-food syndrome. Even a tiny amount of the fruit consumed can trigger allergic reactions. Sometimes people confuse a food allergy with food intolerance. Food intolerance is a less serious condition and does not involve the immune system of the body.

Fruit allergies

Some fruits that trigger the OAS reaction are apricot, kiwi, apple, peach, plum, and pear. Others include banana, melon, and orange. Fruit allergies can trigger reactions that could be very uncomfortable and, if left untreated, could be life-threatening. The common symptoms include swelling of the tongue, throat, and lips, nasal congestion and sneezing, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, and itching in the mouth.

You might also feel a tingling sensation in the mouth and throat. These symptoms should not be ignored. Some people might be allergic to raw fruits but do not face the allergic reactions when the same fruit is cooked.

You should seek medical attention immediately if you feel throat swelling, dizziness, low blood pressure, loss of consciousness or increased pulse after eating.

Causes of food intolerance

There could be many factors which could cause food intolerance such as irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, food additives, and psychological factors. If, after consuming a specific food, you feel a negative physical reaction, consult your doctor.

Your doctor is the best person to diagnose the allergic reaction and could consider a lot of factors that could be genetic.
